Italy has a well-developed transportation infrastructure that includes an extensive network of highways and railways. At the centre of the Mediterranean Sea, Italy plays a strategic role in the TEN-T Core Network:4 of the 9 Corridors that are essential for increasing links between European markets pass through Italy - the Baltic-Adriatic, the Scandinavia-Mediterranean, the Rhine-Alpine, and the Mediterranean. The 4 European Corridors meet in Italy to connect:
- 121 industrial clusters of the second manufacturing economy in Europe
- 62 ports
- 24 freight terminals
- 39 airports (including 3 international hub: Rome, Milan and Venice)
- 90 billion euros of total market value (transport and logistics sectors), with high level of innovation and efficiency ensured by international players investing heavily in technology and automation to stay ahead of the competition
- 46 million of sq.m. already developed for real estate in support of logistics operations, with a turnover of 6 billion euros/year in 2022
1ˢᵗ in the EU in Short Sea Shipping
With a share of 15% of the total tonnage in 2022, Italy is the main SSS country in the EU, including Med Area, Black Sea and Efta countries. Among the various segments Italy is at the top for short sea shipped goods in containers. Use of SSS Italian ports ensures cost-effective shipping, reliable transit times and door-to-door services across Europe, the Mediterranean and the Black Sea.

Freight Terminals at the top of the European ranking
7 of top 15 European Freight Terminals are in Italy, more than any other European Country. Italy can count on a network of 24 Freight Terminals, covering:
- 32 million sq.m. areas dedicated to logistics services
- 3 million sq.m. of Rail/Road terminal (intermodal and conventional)
- 5 million sq.m. of warehouses
- 1,200 Transport and Logistics companies located with more than 20,000 employees
- 50,260 trains inbound/outbound in 2021

2ⁿᵈ in the EU for maritime passenger transport
Italy is one of the largest maritime passenger transport countries in the EU, Efta Countries, Turkey, and Montenegro, with more than 53 million passengers. The ports of Messina and Reggio Calabria lead the ranking, serving 18.2 million passengers per annum.
